Today I examined the SSB capability of my new Sangean ATS-909X shortwave portable receiver.

I tuned to some amateur radio and VOLMET stations on shortwave, mostly using the built-in telescopic whip antenna. For the last clip (Ham radio from the USA) I used the Sangean ANT-60 reel-out wire antenna extended to approx. 3 meters.

Stations received:
14266 kHz EG1EMB - Ham Radio from Spain
5450 kHz Royal Air Force VOLMET, West Drayton, England
8957 kHz Shannon VOLMET, Ireland
18120 kHz N3MZL - Ham Radio from Pennsylvania, USA

Location: 15 km Southeast of Hannover, Germany

Time: around 1800 UTC on 15 May 2011

As you can hear once again, I've got quite a lot of local noise caused by TV sets in the neighbourhood.

  • Another great review on the Sangean. I viewed your first video on the 909x. Thanks, Bob, VE9EE

  • @ve9eearo Thanks for your interest and feedback!

  • Good sound performance even in-door use with its build-in antenna. I'm looking forward to another on FM reception :D.

  • @pesnyaozemle I bought this set mainly for FM, so there will be quite some FM videos coming up. I'm just waiting for the Sporadic-E season to start. :-)

  • Great work with the built in whip...local QRN is always a problem..even i suffer from some and im in the country...mainly if the wife has TV on :)....cant wait to see what this receiver can do on FM ...look forward to more videos cheers and beers Mark

  • @MARKGM20877 Thanks for your encouraging comments. Local noise has badly increased in recent years, obviously due to all those modern electronic gadgets like PCs, WLANs, flat screen TVs etc. Indoor DXing was no problem as late as 2003, at least outside the TV prime time...

I'm also very curious how the ATS-909X will perform on FM during the ES season. No sign of it yet, though... MW&SW performance is pretty much the same as the old ATS-909. Cheers Matthias

  • @tvdxrools Thanks... Of course I hope to do some outdoor DXing again soon... Just waiting for better weather (cool ad rainy at the moment) and the upcoming ES season... Cheers Matthias

  • another good demo ... any plans for out in the country with the long wire or for b2 in a quiet location ... cheers david

  • @SanttuDX Thanks! I'm a little bit disappointed that Sangean didn't seize the occasion to improve SW reception compared to the old ATS-909, but I knew that before buying. Nevertheless, the 909X is a decent, very well built radio. On SW, the Sony 7600GR is much more sensitive with the built-in antenna, making it more suitable for outdoor mobile DXing without needing to carry around a wire antenna. On FM though, the ATS-909X is by far superior not only to the Sony. That's why I bought it.

  • Hi, congarulations about your new Sangean!!! What you think of it? I think it beats Sony 7600GR even it has no sync. Especially if you use external antenna. And FM is really good, don't you think?
