R.A Lister D type Lighting Display

Here is a video I put together of my 1941 Lister D type stationary engine. It was supplied new to Alfa Laval who incorporated it into one of their Milking machines before it was sent off to it's first owner. It obviously had a hard life and was restored over 30 years ago. The engine is well overdue a top end overhaul so that will be done this winter, including a new head gasket, de-carbonising, valve grind, re setting of tappets (very noisy at the moment!) and it will also have an oil change.

It produces 1 1/2 HP at 700RPM and has a 3" bore and stroke with twin overhead valves operated by push rods.

The dynamo was made by Metropolitan Vickers in 1937 and produces 12V, can draw 30AMPS and operated at 1160 RPM, although it's producing 16V here but that's still quite safely within it's design limits.

The engine is running at about 1/2 load so working hard, not bad for a machine of 69 years!

As you can see, it was quite hard to swing it over, the starting handle runs at half speed and is of short throw, plus were running a stout load here, so all in all, hard work!

Ah right, well if you run 12V bulbs in series, or 6V like mine if you can get them, then you shouldn't have a problem with voltage, you need to know what current rating it is though.

Only trouble is, what do you do with 36V?

12V is a useable output, allthough if you got a 36V you could run it slower and or resist the output.
