The Life Of A Basket

Path to Peace bowls and baskets are woven using the same techniques and natural, renewable plant resources that Rwanda women have used for centuries.

Weavers harvest responsibly grown sisal leaves that are split and peeled to reveal the pure inner fibers of the plant. The fibers are colored using natural dyes and dried in the sun in preparation for weaving.

Using an ancient technique, the dyed sisal is coil-sewn around bunched sweetgrass. Weavers frequently change needles threaded with different colors to create a complex and colorful pattern. Amazingly, a 12-inch diameter bowl will consist of several thousand tiny stitches, all done by hand!
