@dsokoll If you've been racing all your life and went down many times, and know the proper way to set up for an impending crash.. it IS a reflex... muscle memory? Trust me, a 1/10th of a second is a lot longer to a racer than a spectator.. I've had headshake that I could've sworn it lasted 5 seconds or more, and you go back and look at the video and it was only a little more than 1 second, if that..

@rkfaithfulblade Give me a break...you can't think that fast. "Well, i better let go so i dont break my wrists because i think i am about the crash." In a 1/10 of a second? Never happen. It was a reflex, no thought process...sorry.

@rkfaithfulblade I think you'll agree that, there is a difference between just sitting up voluntarily, and being knocked backwards & sideways due to an unexpected impact, especially travelling at 150+MPH. Ballaspur on a Senior TT bike is 150MPH+. Please believe me.. The bubble on a 200+MPH Senior TT bike works. I know ;)

@orbiter8 I've sat up many times when doing about 165-170mph topped out on my 600, and it doesn't phase me.. I meant he hit the wall by saying he 'clipped the apex' by the way. That little screen/bubble doesn't do as much as you'd think at those speeds.. but he also wasn't going 170, I just typed that without thinking about it because the title says it. That looked more like about 80-90 mph.

@rkfaithfulblade This is not correct I'm afraid. Richard clipped a stone wall with his left shoulder a split second before this crash, and it was that impact that knocked his left hand from the bars. At that point, the wind, and disorientation did the rest. Believe me.. When you sit upright (or in this case, are knocked upright) from behind a bikes screen/bubble at well over 150MPH, the force of the wind is easily enough to take you down. Never mind heading for a wall too.

@5891jonathan nice sarcasm :DD

Why did he retire?
-
typical americans they dont have a fucking clue about road racing, if he had of stayed in his race position and not takin his hands of the bike he'd probably be dead
-
You have to be really calm and professional to do what he did.

@TheFflynnie and you dont understand sarcasm!
You guys, and the stupid announcer in the video, he took his hands off so he didn't break his wrists in the wreck. It's what your supposed to do, he clipped an apex with his body at 170 and he knew there was no way to recover from it, so he started taking actions to minimize the damage to his body. Pro racer. He didn't 'lose grip,' he was at his max speed for the racing line and that wiggle from the wall-tap ruined it.

dear all: stop making comments about this video, you have no concept of the skill and bravery these people have, or the risks they take. have some respect, he's not a pussy, he made a calculated decision to end his career when he did.'Milky' Quail is now working alongside the organizers of the TT to help new riders by showing them around the course and advising about safety. Have any of you people had the decency to learn about things before commenting??...
