The different spellings in American English were a deliberate change in order to emphasize their new-found individuality. Noah Webster led the change be saying America should have a national character in language as much as anything else. It was meant to inspire patriotism.
At least America went with that instead of changing the national language to Hebrew, as Marquis de Chastellux suggested, trying to create a bigger separation, and evoke a "Chosen People" analogy.

@afroskizzle Because it's mostly American's who make jokes about accents, yet America fucked up the English language by spelling "colour" like "color" and spelling "Favourite" like "favorite"
