My attempt at playing the guitar accompaniment for Martin Carthy's King Willie. I play it in a G modal tuning DGDGGD. Any suggestions and corrections are very welcome. I know that this is not the standard Carthy tuning, which is reputedly CGCDGA, but I think he actually adjusts the bass and top strings to suit the key he's playing in and he also uses other tunings from time to time.

  • Brilliantly done! Where did you learn this from?

  • Thanks very much. I worked this out by ear. I love Martin Carthy's inimitable style. Not at all sure if this is the tuning he uses.

Bonnie Lass of Anglesey also works quite well in Open G.

  • One of my favourite Carthy songs; you get the pulse just right. Good job!

  • Thanks :o)

    PS:

I know it also by Alan Stivell as "Son ar chistr".

And indicible, horrible German versions. :((

  • Thanks :o) The problem with a lot of Martin Carthy's songs is trying to play and sing at the same time.

  • Thanks very much :)
