I blame the contractors for killing the vision for space exploration. All the major players bellied up to the trough to keep their legacy shuttle derived assets going- ATK, LMCO, Boeing. 10 years of development, 10's of billions of dollars spent, but nothing to show for it except one Aries X-1 launch. No capsule built, no service module, no Altair lander? WTF? In 1960 we looked 10 years down the road and built the infrastructure, launch vehicles, landers, etc.. Obama pulled the plug on the pork.
It's not just Obama. The average Joe/Jane on the street isn't interested in space when there are so many problems here and now at home. Some people are interested in moving off world, yes, but they are greatly outnumbered by those who aren't. And in a democracy, majority rules. SIGH.
Thanks to Obama, by the end of this year, there will be no Shuttle, no Constellation spacecraft no U.S. manned space program, no way for us to get into space.
Obama's NASA budget perfectly captures the difference in spirit between Kennedy's liberalism and Obama's.
Kennedy's was an expansive, bold, outward-looking summons. Obama's is a constricted, inward-looking call to retreat.
Fifty years ago, Kennedy opened the New Frontier. Obama has just shut it.
