2011 Chevrolet Cruze -- 40 + mpg highway and finally getting out ahead of the competition with GM's homegrown hard work and good design.

Ecotec 1.4L Turbo Airflow -- Almost 140 HP worth of performance from just 1.4L displacement thanks to turbo-charging.

Outside air is drawn into the intake air box by the turbocharger compressor wheel. The compressor wheel is being driven by hot exhaust gases coming out of the exhaust manifold. The air is forced through an intercooler by the compressor wheel and then travels to the intake manifold. The intake manifold distributes the air to the cylinders where fuel is added and the combustion process takes place. A wastegate opens to regulate the compressor drive power by letting excess exhaust gases escape through the exhaust pipe.

The turbocharger's on-demand performance in the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is like having two engines in the same vehicle -- one for fuel economy and one for power.

Proper sizing of the turbocharger allows the small 1.4L engine to sip fuel under lighter driving conditions because the extra turbo power, normally associated with a larger sized engine, is held in reserve.

  • I dont know why people keep comparing this car to the old junk from the 80's that got 40-50 mpg. Compare the interior, the ride quality, the dependability, the looks. Don't forget that those old gas sippers were death traps that didn't even have air bags or antilock brakes. Get real people. It isn't as easy to make a safe modern car get the mpg of a 25 year old tin can that had 60-80hp. Go buy a motorcycle, at least you'll feel cool when you get squished on the pavement.

  • I have a Cruze Eco...it has been averaging around 40 MPG with everyday driving. On a recent trip to Florida, it got right at 42 for a 1600 mile trip that had a mix of highway and city driving. As for power, it's got enough to get around, and more than enough if you downshift and get into the turbo. I've had it for 2 months and so far I can recommend it. Only gripe I have is that the A/C struggled with the Florida heat...but that is to be expected. Don't be hating until you try one out.

  • Diesel, eh? Might want to check your sources...GM doesn't have any Diesel engines in current cars in the US. Cruze Eco is gasoline...it's not even Atkins cycle. It's the car the new Civic isn't.

  • @ledbetterbrothers dude its a 1700lb car with a 60 hp engine and would disappear if I get hit by a dear lol yea way to go on the 50 mpg though

  • @FordGuy100 thats a diesel engine lol theyre supposed to get better mpg....

  • 1.4 ecotech turbocharger with over 100 L/ 100 km.

  • Bummer...my TDI got 49MPG on the last roadtrip. Kinda late to the game GM...

  • The turbocharger comes from Romania. But it works like a charm. Drop the old american habit of laughing about small engines, try it and we'll talk later. Anyway america can't afford much longer the oil bill beacuse the price of oil didn't stop rising

  • My ss gets 25 city 29 highway haha I still like the cruze and agree its a good not great but good start....die hard gm fan

  • @acueyes I have a cruze lt2 and that crap gets like 24 mpg on mixed driving in nyc
