The Mariner's Children launch their debut EP, New Moore Island, live at The Luminaire in Kilburn, North London on Tuesday 11 November 2010.
What an awesome gig! The seven-piece band played an hour-long set of material so strong that you could be forgiven for thinking that they were launching their second album rather than their first EP!
New Moore Island (Broken Sound BSMCD009) is available now on CD and download, and includes the standout songs 'Coal' and 'It Carved Your Name Into The Ground' -- the latter of which is featured in this video.
The Mariner's Children have received glowing reviews in the press recently, although journalists seem a little too keen to file them under 'nu-folk', alongside Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling. That's no bad place to be, of course. In fact, Mariners double-bass player, Marcus Hamblett , also plays in Laura Marling's band. But that doesn't really do them justice. The instrumentation is similar, but the music is quite different; the Mariners include Pentangle, Iron and Wine and Grizzly Bear among their influences.
