Andy Siegmund, clarinet; Kat Roy, cello & Aaron Franklin, piano

The third movement - Tema con variazione: Pria ch'io l'impegno: Allegretto
("Before I begin work, I must have something to eat")

The theme was a popular one in Vienna at the time when Beethoven wrote this movement for the trio. The theme was actually taken from an aria from the comic opera "A Sailor's Love" by J. Weigel.

  • I played this exact piece, in this exact room, back in 1992. Loved it then. Great job!

  • omg so funny! What did you play?

  • Do you guys play all of this??? Happy memories listening to you..I played this as an undergrad and recieved many hours of coaching!! The main advice i would give is to tidy up some of your rhythmic baton changes - some got a bit ragged. these things show up more in performance so need lots of working out in rehearsal. This is such a fab piece..the other movements are great - more people should play it - its great fun! - smile more

  • the clarinetist and cellist played the 1st movement at their own recital, and I have played the 1st movement separately at chamber music camps some years ago. The 3 of us have read through the 2nd movement a few times, but never performed it. I would have preferred to keep a consistent pulse seamlessly throughout the variations, but our coaches said not to....oh well. Thank you so much for commenting!! -Aaron

  • YAY Aaron!!! I found you!! once I have my trio ready I will post a video answer to yours!!!

  • terrific!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great piece, we've played it too, with a violin in place of the clarinet

  • Clarinet. I was a non major but hung out in the music dept all the time. Ended up marrying the principle flutist. I played in the Wind Symphony and moonlighted from time to time in the orchestra.

  • This is a very difficult piece. For the piano is a very strong partiture, for the violoncello is difficult and for the clarinet is not easy, is difficult and play together is not easy too.

  • nice,salutes from chile

  • It definately sounds much better with clari rather than violin as its sometimes played.
