Now I think that Italy under Mussolini (who I think might have been a fascist?)declared war on us. To seek to separate WW2 into a war between nations on the one hand from the politics on the other is naive.

So we didn't declare war on fascism then? italy, a fascist country declared war on us, so the war was a defensive one to ensure our own security. What about our ally, Fascist Greeche which had adopted the Italian system down to the stiff arm salute, were they fighting a crucade agaisnt fascism as well? oh and what about when we declared war on finland, one of the most democratic countries in the world, did it cause a logical anomoly that caused the universe to implode?

@peppermintjohn666 So Italy's decision to declare war in 1940 was not simply opportumism - I suggest (well perhaps self evidently) wrong planet. Who are "Fascist Greeche"??? What is a "crucade". What is "agaisnt". What is an "anomoly". You have complained about comments on your "contributions" being illiterate, yet you exhibit these very qualities. Would this be the first time that fascism and hypocrisy have come together? Maybe not.

? What planet are you on? The mortality rate of the ruling elite from a UK viewpoint has been greater than that of the working class - subalterns in ww1 as an example.

I think that you may have a problem with apostrophes - elite's - think not.

Like many families in the UK I have relatives who died fighting nazism/fascism. I am extremely proud of their sacrifice and my country. I take it that you think I have no knowledge of the battles that my relatives fought?

@pmj "Greeche" "crucade" - what language is this? Certainly not English. You will be well aware that the declaration of war on Finland did not result in any action in either direction. It is you who asserted that the Uk declared a war against fascism. I have asserted that the true position is the contrary: Italy declared war on us. I take it that you are not troubled by the UK's declaration of war on Nazi Germany? In any case anomalies are part and parcel of history.
