Another sea shanty I first learned as a young boy of 9 or 10. We had a singing teacher called Miss Kennaugh who was inspirational and taught us lively memorable songs such as this and Drunken Sailor and others. I suspect that my love of folk songs probably had its roots in her singing lessons. Reportedly, the "Donkey" of the chorus refers to a donkey engine, used for loading and unloading cargo. The tune is a variation on Hieland Laddie, which often has interchangeable verses. Some of the verses I sing here are edited versions of the more bawdy lyrics I found when I looked it up on the internet and decidedly not the words Miss Kennaugh would have taught us!!

  • Wow - I remember this from junior school in the 1950s.

It must have been one of the first few years

of school. How great that they used to teach

little kids to sing songs like this! What wonderful teachers we had in the UK

    back then...

Makes me still think that donkeys are wonderful creatures to this very day.

In fact I saw some in a field the other day here in Florida! Ha ha!

Nice playing too by the way!
