In fact it's one of the few parts of a knighting that is period, along side the vigil. But yes it was common place in many cultures for many different reasons, as he describes briefly in the video.

The buffet is symbolic of the pain that is a knights lot and last blow that for honor's sake can go unanswered - It speaks of conviction of the King that this is the last blow the Knight (the king man) takes without answering - (ie..The king now expects the knight to mete out low justice to all - the knight need look no farther than himself to decide what is just and right - That's my two cents

It was a Norman tradition. it was also a viking tradition. it was to signify the last blow that a true warrior should receive. a "right of manhood" as you will.
