Sal "The Barber" Maglie, former pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers was the mystery guest on the 07 October 1956 episode of WML.

The next day, Maglie would be the losing pitcher in Game 5 of the World Series, which was a perfect game pitched by the Yankees' Don Larsen. The Yankees would go on to win the Series in seven games.

  • In the 1956 season, Rizzuto was released by the Yankees in mid-season. But he was made a Yankees broadcaster the next season and was there for 40 years. He called Roger Maris' 61st home run.

  • wow that's crazy they playing a world series during this. between games 4 and 5. rizzuto was in his last season, 38 yrs. old and not starting.

i've seen a number of baseball players on wml. wasn't willie mays on once? that one seems to be missing.

  • Maglie gave up five hits and two runs; for him, this was a fairly typical game for him; I'd take Maglie over Larson any day.

  • @44032 If only, for Sal's sake, Mantle didn't rob Hodges, and then the next batter, Amoros, hit the ball into the seats: but not foul! It would have been a 2-1 lead for Brooklyn!

  • LOL,The only one on the panel that could use Maglie's services was Phil Rizzuto.

  • He probably was still dumbfounded. Maglie was the ace of two Giants world series teams and would have won the CY young award a couple times in the early 50s if it had existed back then. Larson was a bum who had just lost 21 games with the Orioles two years prior.

  • Well spoken, well educated and a great sense of humor. Says a lot. Clearly a hard-luck loser to Larson.

And how about these guys playing in the World Series tomorrow and they're doing a TV show at !0:30 the night before! Probably wouldn't happen now.......

  • On Monday, October 8, 1956, Sal Maglie pitched a five hitter vs. the Yankees, giving up only 2 runs. But Don Larson pitched a perfect game. That was the day after this appearance.

  • Thanks for all your great work documenting WML. Two points of order. Duke Snider was a Dodger, not a Yankee and Phil's name is Rizzuto, not Razuto.

  • Look's who is on the panel--Yankee great Phil Rizzuto--Holy Cow!!!
