Regardless of your "years in the industry" you clearly have not got a grip on what "improvisation" means. The idea is NOT to 'do it again stroke for stroke'. Please remember, music is a LANGUAGE. When you're having a conversation with a friend, do you pull out your 10 most 'well-rehearsed' responses? Of course not. You react to the mood/content of the dialogue. This is what a great jazz improviser does. Jason Bittner and Joey Jordison are damned PARROTS. Repeat, repeat, repeat. wow.....

Bill's talent doesn't lie in Portnoy-sized sets with hitting things really fast. It lies in taking a very simple tune and playing with it, not over it, to change it. Listen to how many ways he interprets and expresses that simple riff in less than a minute.
