Composer: Alfredo Catalani
Opera: La Wally
Performer: Eva Marton Charlae Olaker

Wally will not agree to her parents' choice of husband!

Ebben? Ne andrò lontana,
Come va l'eco della pia campana,
Là, fra la neve bianca;
Là, fra le nubi d'ôr;
Laddóve la speranza, la speranza
È rimpianto, è rimpianto, è dolor!

O della madre mia casa gioconda,
La Wally ne andrà da te, da te
Lontana assai, e forse a te,
E forse a te, non farà mai più ritorno,
Nè più la rivedrai!
Mai più, mai più!

Ne andrò sola e lontana,
Come l'eco è della pia campana,
Là, fra la neve bianca;
Ne andrò, ne andrò sola e lontana!
E fra le nubi d'ôr!

Well, then? I will go far away,
As far as the echo of the church bell,
There, through the white snow,
There, through the golden clouds,
There, where hope, hope
Is regret, is regret and pain!

Oh, from my mother's happy house,
Wally will go away from you, from you.
Far enough away, and maybe,
And maybe, she will never return to you.
You'll never see her again.
Never again, never again.

I will go alone and far,
As far as the echo of the church bell,
There, through the white snow;
I will go, I will go alone and far,
Among the golden clouds.

  • Apologies for my exageration but having loved this aria, sung by Callas, te Kanawa, Bertoli etc, for so long I find this hard to take.

  • This is not surprising, my friend. People have different taste. Different ideas make the world an interesting place to stay, sometimes, isn't it, if it is not harmful to others' existence. Very best regards, Chih-Huei

  • This is rather like listening to favourite aria whilst having root-canal work done without anaesthetic.

  • So unbearable? I am so so very sorry. My deepest sympathy.

    The good news is that one can turn off the music any moment, whilst when haveing a root canal...

  • this is the Greej Godess.

  • I guess you meant Greek. Glad to know that. Thanks.

  • I've had this piece on one of my first few electronic music CD's and it kept me fascinated ever since. I always thought there's a fair similarity from classical ages to some modern electronic sound, although true classics lovers would rather knock me off.

    Callas herself is fine in her ways, but why to seal a piece of music, that is timeless, to a certain period of time? Why not open up one's horizon and share the streams of the ages...

  • Von Maria Callas gesungen ist es nie zu Toppen, aber trotzdem ne tolle " neue" Performance.....

  • @tissetatten greek godess = Maria Anna Sophia Cecilia Kalogheròpoulos = Maria Callas

  • @keeperholder what do you mean by greek godess?

  • @DavidMJordan I love maria callas version of this aria to, its better then tabaldis. But we live in a different time now, I can aprisiate this version to

  • Different ideas are only interesting if they reveal some truth. Otherwise, they're worthless. If there is a purpose to music, an aesthetic, then one can judge music based on how well it achieves that goal.

  • hahaha. nice. even if your statement is disingenuous, it still serves to curtail the excessive enthusiasm of the tasteless.

  • tnx for the post, is that eva martoni?

  • The singer is black American sopranist Charlae Olaker who lives in Germany
