More precisely, an anti-whaling song with lyrics by Pete Sandford and recorded by Holly Kirby (alpet07)
Once again, to the dismay of millions worldwide, the Japanese whaling fleet is down in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, killing whales under the pretence that it is simply 'research'.
Meanwhile, environmentally conscious organisations such as Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are having to do the work of the Australian government who have passed a federal law forbidding this poaching but lack the conviction to stand up to Japan over this outrage for fear of damaging trade relations.

The lyrics:

SILENT SEAS

Let's protect the whales from the harpoons of
Japan, Norway and Iceland
We should save the whales for the seven seas
Need the giants of the deep

See them glide and dive oh so gracefully
The keepers of the ocean
Don't let killers win. We must take a stand
For the giants of the deep

Tell them how you feel. That it's time to stop
The murder of cetaceans
Tell the killing fleets 'Quit your false research'
On the giants of the deep

Hear the humpback sing like a diva, so
Don't let the seas fall silent
Feel your spirit soar when Sea Shepherd's there
For the giants of the deep

I've nothing against these nations
I just wish they would see the light
But I swear in the days we've left
We'll make the oceans safe
We'll make the oceans safe

As the years go past will you want to see
An empty, whale-free ocean?
Or a safe haven where the whales are free
To be giants of the deep

Let's protect the whales from the harpoons of
Japan, Norway and Iceland
We should save the whales for the seven seas
Need the giants of the deep

Save the giants of the deep
Save the giants of the deep

  • I happen to believe in whale hunting. Why should they be any different than say a deer? I am amazed at the number of viewers of Whale Wars who actually support the Japanese. I believe that those of us that support Whale Hunting are in the majority.

  • @HOOSIERLOVER There's only one thing wrong though - your belief that a majority of people support whale 'hunting' is totally incorrect. It's estimated that in the US (for example) only 27% support whaling & the number is only this high due to ignorance amongst the general population regarding the facts of the issue.

  • It so funny how countries like Norway, Iceland and Japan (and recently the Faroe Islands) gets all the blame for whaling (evenn though it's not even a big business in those countries), when Russia, Canada and USA also happens to hunt whales bigtime.

    Gotta love American Propaganda! :D

(oh, and of course I don't support whaling, or killing any animals/humans, don't misunderstand :P)

  • @iwannabelikeyou

When you say that Russia, Canada & the USA hunt whales 'bigtime' you're very much mistaken.

I don't agree with any of their 'hunts' but to put it into perspective, you're looking at numbers killed of:

    USA: approx 50 per year.

    Canada: approx 10 per year.

    Russia: approx 140 per year.

These are by indigenous populations, not commercial factory-ship operations hunting inside a whale sanctuary as Japan does.

    Japan's self-awarded 'quota' was for 1035 whales in 2010

  • sounds almost like fields of gold by Sting

  • @Bluenova91

It's based on the tune of Eva Cassidy's version of Sting's original song.

The man himself agrees that Eva's version is the best :)

  • @HOOSIERLOVER lots of people don't like deer killing either. Logically people must either contribute to aquaponic operations for meat or go vegan.

  • Sea Shepherds 4 ever! FTW :D

In my opinion though, I believe that whaling will never stop BUT it can be minimized a lot! Whales are awesome animals, why someone should kill them just to earn money.?. :(

  • Beautiful song, gorgeous voice :-)

  • Fu whalers

  • It is an impossible task for me to try to fathom the mentality of anyone who supports whaling. One viewing of the harpooning of a whale should be enough to melt the most hardened heart, but it apparently isn't. The notion of someone being able to watch a beautiful fellow creature writhing in agony for half an hour and still feel nothing is beyond my comprehension. Such a person must be completely without compassion or empathy, and I can only pity them. BTW, Holly Kirby is amazing!

  • Whalers are barbarians.

Anyone that questions the 'one sided ness' of Whale wars ( for example ) or anti-whalers clearly have no thoughts towards the pain these animals go threw. From the fear , to the harpoon these animals are killed for a reason that makes no sense. Clearly whalers know its wrong because of the BS "research" excuse...

  • @babyarnlove Ever wonder why Whales Wars is so one sided. Its because it is mostly the Sea Shepherds decide what you the viewer gets to see. This story is from their side only. The Japanese are portrayed as villains and the Sea Shepherds are the heroes. Some would call this propaganda. What would you call it?

  • these animals are beautiful and amazing, killing whales is a ruin over nature

  • @HOOSIERLOVER Because deer are quite numerous, where whales are not. Also, a bullet is a quick, near painless death. A harpoon to the tail to drag you aboard a ship is not. I dislike any form of hunting, but at least deer hunters have a reason.

  • @patrick123POB you are the one that is wrong and messed up in the head to beleive that hunting is is bad. but i do agree with you that whales should not be hunted for "research". don't blame hunting.
