George Martin once said this song was written in response to Britain's then-new luxury tax, which levied a 90%(!) tax on the incomes of the "super-wealthy," and was designed to fleece especially The Beatles, as they were deemed inappropriately rich by the status quo. The idea was that The Beatles didn't deserve their fabulous riches because they didn't work for them...
