A review of the much-anticipated Linux Mint 12 'Lisa' operating system. Overall, this distribution bridges a wide gap between the traditional desktop interface, and the future desktop of Gnome 3. Top of the line open-source applications with custom Mint tools make for a very nice, albeit limited, user experience.

I like the direction that Linux Mint 12 is headed, but there are still some implementation tweaks that need to be made in both Gnome 3's Mint Gnome Shell Extensions (MGSE) and the Gnome 2 fork MATE desktop environment.

Let me know what you think below!

  • @Petersoftx64 Congrats!! Wow, 50,000 views is fantastic!

  • what would u say is the best linux?

  • @piaaMRBASS I'd say Ubuntu, or Linux Mint. Try both as a Live CD an see which one you like better.

  • My big issue is that I can't get the .iso files to burn properly to a cd or DVD. I have tried 3 times and the iso's won't make a bootable image to install. Funny thing is that ocelot 11.10 worked easily!

  • @Billthesheepdog Try checking the md5 sum of the image you downloaded. It might be corrupted. If so, just download Linux Mint again.

  • Why doesnt the LinuxMint 12 DVD come with the windows installer?

  • @Billthesheepdog Try Roxio Easy Media Creator..work perfectly for me..

  • @grey0powerlessnesss What makes you think i have an asus eee 701 atom powered netbook?. Hope thats not dementia kicking in there ol fella ;-)

The laptop running Mint is a dual core with 4gb ram.

  • Mint does good.

  • @totoroben USB WIFI better internal wifi: long cable bypasses obstacles, get wireless-N, etc.

  • @westiesworld4u On your Asus eee 701 Atom-powered PC? KDE, etc requires large & highpowered PCs.

  • @xxxxfatcatxxxx Sidebar: 1) Docky, 2) Awn or 3) Cairo. I personally like Xubuntu, with 4 sidebars, all 'intellihide', but no other addons to slow nor jam everything.

  • linux mint is for people with eagle eyes, cuz i cant see shit even with my coke bottles. i dont see anything special about LM12, ubuntu 10.10 is the OS of choice.

  • Why are so many people scared of change? Gasp, Gnome 3! Gasp, Unity! Functionality is not lost, it's just rearranged. After using Unity, I couldn't possibly go back to something like Mint. Get with the times, ol' timers. Change is inevitable.

  • Can you still download and use 11? It sounds like it was a bit better. (I'm new to Linux)
