  • I learned here more than I did in school

    You make it so simple.

  • For all those who say that masturbation, based on a Pro Life view would be massacre of "potential individuals", there is a distinct difference in 'potential' that you are describing. Gametes are haploid and on their own, do not produce a biologically diverse individual, a fertilized ovum - a zygote is a completely different matter. While the statement of IVF is logically valid, yours is not. I do believe your statement is a false syllogism. I do not take sides, but do I do despise bad logic.

  • @iHonestIago what idiot doesn't know this, its pretty obvious that we don't grow babies from our testicles.

  • @Shalek If you're suggesting that one of the sides could be obliterated by an unbiased presentation of the facts, then yes, I'd have to agree with you.

  • why not perform IVF but dont put them back in the mum and you'll get many embryonic stem cells from embryos which were going to be terminated anyway

  • @WhichDoctor1 Yep, blastocysts used in embryonic stem cell research would otherwise be medical waste leftover from IVF.

  • @Shalek Facts have a tendency to expose bullshit. Hence why Wikipedia, even with its "neutral" point of view, supports evolution. Wikipedia just doesn't point this out explicitly.

  • @jccarbunkle Their position is not based on logic. For one thing, I don't understand why the anti-choicers aren't upset with IVF. IVF treats excess blastocysts it produces, i.e. the ones that would be used for stem cell research, as medical waste. I've never heard of a "personhood advocate" who opposes IVF for this reason. Even things like the recent Virginia law grant an exception for IVF.

  • @rogerscottq Sperm cells don't have the "infrastructure" to support a zygote or its descendants (although that would be an interesting experiment...). Egg cells reproduce in such a way that they mature one-at-a-time and would face the same problems the sperm would until they mature.

  • @Psalm789 It all depends on their chemical environments. For instance, in the morula, the cells on the surface are exposed to chemicals which will induce "placenta-ness", while those on the inside aren't exposed and so won't become a placenta. The cells creep around like an amoeba until they differentiate and "glue" themselves into tissue.

  • Q: what keeps haploid cells from combining to create stem cells within the organism?

  • how do the embryonic stem cells know what specialized cells to turn into?
