Frieza lost even though he was the stronger one. Not by a lot, but by a bit.

On the contrary, They were even, If freiza wasn't so badly damage he would have surpassed SSJ goku's PL.

I find it interesting that people think Goku went SS and it was game over. Not at all.
In fact, when Frieza powered up soon thereafter, he was actually stronger than Goku, and nearly killed him. Goku won because Frieza couldn't support that power, and Goku could. It was all a matter of outlasting.

Goku turning Super Saiyan, a case of the heroes finally getting a plot device that helps them against Freeiza, where as all the previous ones helped Freeiza. It was so cool when Goku turned Super Saiyan, Freeiza is scared stiff and ends up taking a huge effort just to brake free of Goku grabbing his hand.
