To all Deaf young people in Italia
Brussels, May 2011
Dear Deaf Italian Youth,
With dismay and indignation the board of European Union of the Deaf Youth (EUDY) learned about the recent developments regarding the recognition of the Italian Sign Language in the Italian Senate.
UNCRPD
EUDY's main objective in Europe is to protect the human rights for the deaf young people, which means everyone has a right to education, sport, activities, etc. in their own language; the sign language. This is also described in the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD). With the proposal of the Italian Senate to recognise the LIS as a gestural means of communication, it's clear the Italian government is breaking the protocols and agreements as described on the convention, they've ratified themselves. The board members are agreeing with each other this is a development we can not accept.
What is EUDY doing now?
Hereby the board of EUDY declares she is supporting the cause of the Italian Deaf Youth. We will publish our support and cooperation on our website, our Facebook-page and several other media. Also we will send a letter to the Italian parliament and the Italian Senate. We will make it clear the official representation of Deaf young people in Europe will not accept the recognition of the LIS as a gestural means of communication (LMG).
What can you do?
You can join the demonstration against the decision on May 25th in Rome. Unfortunately the EUDY board can not join you, but in our minds and hearts we will be with you.
On our website and Facebook-page we will put the letter sent to the government. If you want to say something about this letter or the situation in Italia, you can contact the secretary: d.hoogeveen@eudy.info, or put it on our Facebook-page.
Fight for your language, your identity!
The board of the European Union of the Deaf Youth,
THANKS from Italy!
