That was the day Bölts yelled at Ullrich: "Quäl dich du Sau" (fight / torture yourself, you bastard). He was having a bad day. Bölts knew how dangerous this could be. Virenque did not.

@eteokles3 the point is Virenque was ahead and Ullrich was isolated. you're probably right that he wouldn't make up the time, but he had the chance to try but didn't take it! it was Ullrich's only bad day that year

@mrwulong and @AbuMaxOne Virenque was in the lead on the road 'challenging' for the yellow jersey. he decided he didn't want to work because too many riders were following him, so he sat up and sent his teammates away for the stage win! his best (only?) chance to win a Tour de France and he blew it big time!
