Pinetop Boogie Woogie, recorded in 1928 by Pinetop Smith, was one of the first boogie woogie style recordings to make a hit and cement the name for the style. Pinetop was scheduled to do another recording session in 1929 but died from a gunshot wound a day before the session. Stories differ as to who was the intended target. He was 25 years old.
