@gezim117 Actually, in the movie story, the EMP weapons were detonated mostly to disable any defensive measures and hopefully some of the missiles themselves in the very nearby Whiteman Air Force Base, which is where you see the Minuteman III missiles launching from earlier.

The movie 'The Day After' was influential in bringing a real change in how we perceived nuclea war. Even politicians who saw the movie were woken up by it.

@LetsGoAnimate19 The EMP wave have a very large effect radius. Probably one explosion will burn down all system(which is not protected from the EMP or not 5 meters below the surface) in north america. One nuke however only could destroy 1 city. Thats the whole point.

@hammer082 When you see the explosion, that means you survived the heatwave and the shockwave will smash you to the nearest wall or glass pieces will tear you apart very soon. You could probably survive the immidiate effects in a basement. So....run into a building and find a basement to hide(but you probably dont have enough time to do that so then its no matter how you will die. Sit down and relax it will be over soon).

@gezim117 They dont create EMP burst because of that. The main reason is to disable producing and economy centers, make the enemy deaf by disable satellites, radars and communications and to minimalize the enemy's retaliation ability.

My family were very active in the anti-nuke campaigns and so I was forced to watch this when I was 7. My mother informed me that the kid suffering from radiation sickness was my age. Ahh the memories of childhood innocence.
