i couldn't fin the wire at home depot and asked them where they have they looked at me like i was crazy, so, no flaker for me i suppose :(

is there a simpler way to make it? as in without drilling into steel...

Copper works the best. If you do a search you can find copper nails on the net. Just beat a nail into a broom handle and shape a tip. The copper doesnt last long and the handle will eventually break, but it would get you started. You can try a set screw to hold your copper but being tapped into soft wood it wont hold long.

I had heard about it through another knapper. It works great! I am stil using both of those flakers featured in these videos.
