A 12 car set of 'Jersey Arrows' makes a station stop, and then takes off on the NEC to NY. These high powered electric multiple unit trains are capable of speeds excess of 80mph, and can get halfway there by the time the last car leaves the platform.

  • When they rebuilt them they were rebuilt with less because they assumed that the high horsepower and traction of the AC motors would help but problems with bearings and motors locking up at high speed put that to a hault, now they are stuck at 80mph.

  • They used to be able to go 100mph but they removed one of the traction motors from each car for a reason that I don't remember.

  • w8..youre a NJT engineer?

  • There is one other thing Id change. Get rid of that dam deadman pedal and just put in an alerter. That and make them good for 100mph. What side are you on? Newark or Hoboken?

  • They better get new ones. Im still quite wet behind the ears but the MUs are my favorite to run by far. The ONLY thing id change about them is the seating arrangment for engineers, and the spring release throttle. I cant sit down without my foot/knee/leg getting cramped so I just stand and run them instead.

  • I've heard two stories. One they are just going to get rid of them and two they are going to replace them with new ones. Personally I hope they replace them with new ones. MUs are the best kind of equipment for the service we provide. That fast acceleration cant be matched by push pull equipment.

  • they should make the arrow 3 faster but it seems unsafe

  • We will believe it when we see it.

  • NJT is planning to replace the Arrow III's with 110 Arrow IV's (i think, about the Arrow IV designation). i read it in a NJT press release on capital budget.

  • Once in 1993 by ABB Traction. They are now AC traction instead of DC hence the nice motor humm.
