Leave your machines on, don't power down your drives, thats one of the things that can cause failure - but then again, thats what backups (or RAID) is for. =)

I s it a good idea to have a hard drive aspins down at all, lets say of an hour of inactivity?? for thoughs who lkeave their computers on alot??? or should they not leave it on when not in use at all

Its like turning your car engine off at a stoplight. The more you do it, the less the drive will last. Just have a backup or set a cron job to touch the drive for you every 5 mins... (thats what I did).
