Shiverburn Galaxy - Mission 1
Prince Pikante's Peppery Mood
This is how the Freezeflame Galaxy in the original Super Mario Galaxy should've been done. It was my least favorite galaxy in the game, mainly because it claimed itself to be one of those temperature-extreme places but didn't quite live up to it until the third mission. Otherwise, it could've been separated into two other galaxies, if the Melty Molten Galaxy weren't already there.
The Shiverburn Galaxy, on the other hand, constantly mixes up the burning and the chilly. (It must be the easiest place to catch a cold.) It fully integrates the two themes together, first alternating between one and the other and later combining them.
You begin with a path through magma going around a volcano. A switch appears that freezes the area, turning the rock into ice (?) and allowing Mario to get through unhurt. Then it goes to a magma planet where you must get from one side to the other across platforms that move across the latitudes of the planet. After this is an icy path bombarded by meteors that melt into the ice, turning it dangerous to the touch for a moment before disappearing. Then we have the inverse, a magma path bombarded by ice crystals super-cold enough to melt themselves into a layer of ice for a little while before evaporating. Finally, we go to a field of ice, where Prince Pikante waits.
Prince Pikante is the son of King Kaliente and is quite infuriated at Mario for having beaten up his pop. (And if you don't know much Spanish, "caliente" means hot and "picante" means spicy.) Pikante rides around in what is probably a tank but looks more like a super-wheelchair due to the wheels. He'll zoom around the area shooting fireballs at you, which turn any ice they hit into a pool of magma for a moment. They both succumb to getting hit by coconuts, but whereas King Kaliente was stationary and you didn't have to move around much, Prince Pikante is very mobile making him considerably more difficult than his father. Not to mention the meteor showers he can induce where tons of fireballs (and a few coconuts) rain down from the sky.
While this is not the first place Mario can skate around (he could do so in Cosmic Cove and Freezy Flake), the duel against Prince Pikante is te first point where it's required. Mario takes quite a bit of time to get moving on the ice, and by then, Pikante's wheels, equipped with spikes for the ice, has already hit him. (Needless to say, Luigi's already slippery running is made even worse by the ice, making it quite an uphill battle as Luigi without the skating.) Only by skating can Mario get around quickly enough to dodge Pikante.

who would have thought the prince would be weaker than the king?
kinda obvious, since Pikante isn't exactly in a self-powered battle arena, unlike Kaliente was in his lava pools and such! not to mention has to be carried around in a fireball/watermelon shooting tank for the whole battle! honestly, a king would train his son better than that! xD

@xXPikaKingXx I personally found Prince Pikante to be way harder than King Kaliente, actually.

@stardreams713 All I can tell you is to memorize the patterns and spin if your jump is a little off.
