In most cases, you're right. The problem is, some animals are incapable of being released. If they were born in captivity, then that's all they know and releasing them would endanger the animal. Also some may have been injured and can no longer care for themselves in the wild. Captive animals play a big role in allowing us to teach people about them and how to keep them safe so that they can exist in the wild like they're supposed to.
