The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-il, has died and South Korea's military is now on alert.

Many in the region are nervous about the transition of power to his likely successor and young son.

Back in North Korea, a very public outpouring of grief is under way for a leader who kept a very tight grip on power and the people he ruled.

Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports from Beijing, China.

  • Give it some time the north korean regime will eventually be toppled by a people that are starving and want freedom!

  • South Korea FTW! North Korea shall fall one day

  • however North Koreans want to live is their business. they don’t interfere in the lives of the westerners. why do westerners always want to interfere with others lives? it’s a very sick and parasitic mindset. North Koreans are not setting up military bases around European countries. they are not invading countries and killing people.

  • SO RONEREY
