Because some of them really couldn't sing. Check out my clips of Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, and Audrey Hepburn on this channel and at lostvocals3.

I don't mind Gabel in that number at all. It's a cute number. I just think it's funny that studios dubbed over some actors that were fairly good singers but didn't dub mediocre singers. Why dub them at all?

"The Jolson Story" and "With a Song in My Heart" both heavily promoted the fact that the subject of the film was doing the dubbing.
I think Gable was charming in his number - as was Jimmy Stewart in "Easy to Love".

I new about Al Jolson for Larry Parks in "the Jolson Story". In their defense Parks was playing Al Jolson in that film, and Jolson had a very distinct voice.
Most of those others are mind boggling. As many of those dubbed actors had very nice voices.
Of course now I'm curious as to why they did NOT dub Clark Gables rendition of Putting on the Ritz in "Idiot's Delight".

Debbie was famously dubbed in two songs in SITR - in fact, you can hear her own voice in them at my other channel, lostvocals3. The producers of "Glee" give credit to The Beelzebubs, a longtime singing group from Tufts University. Do your research and you'll see that these are all correct.
I would add Jessica Lange in Sweet Dreams... she lip-synced the entire thing to Patsy Cline.

This is amazing! I am still so at wonder how you have been able to collect so many of these clips and identify the true vocalists. How have you been able to get the names of the dubbers and to get the original vocals by the actors?
