Shanghai is often called the New York City of China. It is the center of change and new frontiers in social economic behavior. It is the largest and possible most cosmopolitan city in China. Architecture is a mix between China and European architectural styles. Some offices, hotels, museums, and houses built by European architects are replicas of traditional buildings of Europe. Shanghai has been reforming their architecture since 1990s. They are racing to redeem their reputation as flashiest, most fun futuristic city in the far east.
American Architect John Portman is an early Pioneer and prolific Shanghai designer. The Portman center includes the Ritz-Carlton hotel where presidents and prime ministers often stay. He also built tomorrow square which looks like a stinger missile fired on downtown skyline , he also built the bund towers which look like they have a gold crown on the top of the tower.
