OK, I will say it: this is the most dangerous spot in Saipan. The Grotto is a must for the professional diver but still claims lives every year. It is a large, deep, landlocked hole with an underwater cave leading to the open ocean. Notice how cautious the scuba diver guides are in trying to get the tourists to the little island. The guides know the risks but the unsuspecting site-seers can and do wash away easily.

  • @urchin76 Thanks Gray. I'm not sure if either military used the Grotto. This area in Saipan was first used by the Japanese to store ordnance. Then, after the Battle of Saipan, the American military used this area to stockpile ordnance for the expected ground invasion of Japan.
