  • Thanks for the tip Dano. What do you make the gasket from? My gasket is a little worn/

  • This thing is made to run on gasoline as it has self cleaning jet, every time you open and close valve on the burner it cleans it self. For starting this device you put you`r hands over the tank to worm fuel inside for a minute or two and the presure weal build up inside so then you open up valve and small amount of gas is going to drop on the lower plate so you can light it up.As was made original for solders so no other fuel then gasoline and no pipete or straw to pool out fuel.

  • Hi, thanks for the video. It appears that the jet on your 8R is a little wider than it should be. The flame is yellow, indicating it is burning rich--just a tad. If your 8R is at max heat, then it needs a little tweaking. The flame could be more robust than it is now. Not enough fuel is reaching the burner form the tank. Changing the wick in the fuel tank would do the trick, but it can involve some labor.

  • I have had mine for close to 30 years and it has server me well. Here is a tip for most all white gas stoves. Do a Google search for "Wire Gauze with Ceramic Center". This is great stuff and available from most lab supply companies. It will allow better control of the heat by creating a greater surface area and an easier simmer. Stows nicely in the lid of the 8R.

  • Great video, thanks for posting. I just got a stove thats looks just like like this but it has a key instead of the control knob. Do you know if it is a different model. It's not in great condition but if I can get it running I'll post it. Thanks

  • Don't use petrol, the addatives make nasty fumes and the residue will clog up the stove. You need napth for fuel such as Aspen4T pure petrol or 'panel wipe' which you can get from most motor spares shops in the UK, about £12 for five litres which will last you a LONG time. These are a great little stove, I have a few myself. Look out for a Svea 123 now :) similar stove but is prettier to look at. For gaskets you can make them from nitrile sheeting. base-camp.co.uk sell all the spares.

  • I have an optimus 8R and im missing some parts.Where is the best way to get parts?

  • I bought mine when I was 9. I'm now 49! I love this thing and I don't care if newer ones are lighter and better. These are great. USE WHITE GAS, COLEMAN FUEL. I keep hearing people say unleaded or leaded. I guess it's an American thing but you'll die if you put gasoline in it!

  • I have used my stove in extreme weather conditions in the Canadian Rocky Mountains (home) with very few problems.

A scrub with steel wool and some heat proof paint will have that old relic looking like new.

One tip I can give you is the bottom gets very hot and can burn tables and melt plastic. And never put a running stove on snow or ice, they flare up.

Best survial tool you could own!

  • I've owned my 8r for about 38 years or so and it has never failed me. I use white gas only. My only complaint is that it is a bit heavy. I keep a plastic eye dropper with it to draw fuel from the tank for priming, a simple straw would probably do the same.

    Cheers.

  • cool gonna get my hunter out and boil some water
