Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist, talks about depression. In this video he discusses the how psychology and psychiatry differ from their approach to depression. Is depression really a chemical imbalance in the brain or a psychological problem? Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin.

SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no proof that depression or mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain nor is there any proof that antidepressants correct an imbalance. These medications often time have horrible side effects like agitation and sexual dysfunction.

This is a different view of depression.

In this video Dr. Breeding will discuss tips on how to recover from depression, become a more happy person.

  • There is no chemical test for depression, but if you get an MRI you can clearly see that the part of the brain that regulates emotion has much less activity in someone who is depressed. Don't believe me. Check it out for yourself.

  • Depression was born when modern man denied the tragic reality of life. Maybe it used to be possible to be severely sad without being ashamed of it, nowadays that has become impossible. To be sad in modern society is an insult to society: 'how can you be sad in all this wealth?' Thus the sad person feels ashamed and the psychiatrist role is to devaluate the experience of this person by turning him into a patient, by making his experience a symptom. And who profits?

  • @Jullyii I just think that to turn 'depression' into a disease you make it worse.

  • @Jullyii I am diagnosed depressed a few years ago. And yes, I am not depressed ;) .

  • Depression is real. It can affect anyone in life. There is no evidence to suggest there is a chemical imbalance in the brain, however genetically, you are more likely to suffer from depression if your parents suffered ( this might be vage, but true). Robert Enke (German Goalkeeper) earned more in a week then what most people earn in a year - yet he commited suicide and was serverely depressed. Depression is a serious illness - I am still on that road. I hope everyone has a happy 2012

  • Thank you

  • @munjerdo: ouch! That sounds pretty rough! See, i've never heard of anybody actually dying from marijuana. Of course, i assume like most smoke, it would afect the lungs and cause ephezema, but i must admit i HAVE heard of anxiety attacks in some ppl! I feel like they should legalize marijuana still. Some people like yourself may not be suitable for it, which is why they have clinics to decide wether or not you actually "need" marijuana.

Yes but smokeing weed may throw you even deeper into depression.. I know it from experience.. I almost had heart attack.. Never experienced such anxiety in my life before. The effect of weed greatly depends on your toghts and mind.

Smoked killos of it before , now i evade it.

  • One more thing! It KILLS me how doctors tell you that smoking weed won't doesn't help. My doctor said "smoking weed won't help you, because it changes your brain chemistry. Weed will only throw your chemical imbalance off." But wait a second, thats what the medicine does! The only difference is that my medicine changes my imbalance, and it takes 4 to 6 weeks to work, and a joint changes my imbalance and it only takes 5 minutes! "well its only temporary" they argue! SO IS THE DAMN MEDICINE!
