  • Danke.

Also 140km/h sind durchaus machbar.

  • Thank you for reading my replie.

The roads near Keld before Buttertubs are some of the poorest i have ever driven along.

I know its big farming area but the erosion and potholes were years in the making and made for uncomfortable driving.

The winding steep remote roads around Mucker,Buttertubs and Keld are totally unsuited for economy driving so i was more than surprised with my 750 total.

Also the amount of dead rabbits along that road was unnerving

    I actually lost count.

  • Apart from Newcastle, I've visited all the places in your message. : )

  • This impressive economy figure was achieved on a long journey from my home in Llandudno in North Wales to Newcastle with some sight seeing along Hadrians Wall.

Home via Penrith and North Yorkshire Moors including Buttertubs Pass and Keld.

    Got home 457 on clock.

A weeks drive to work and a trip around Snowdonia left 750 on my clock before the warning buzzer sounded mening less than 3litres of fuel left.

All this at around 50-55 mph very careful driving.

An easy 100+ to the gallon.

  • If I remember correctly, the weight of the AX diesel was 720 kg, which I believe is the same as the Smart, although the AX probably had better aerodynamics than the Smart. Cars are far too heavy these days, as a result of all the gadgets & crash protection.

  • By the way, if your figures for your C1 are accurate, then you achieved a figure of 110 miles per gallon. Well done!

I used to own a Citroen AX with the 53 bhp 1.3 indirect injection diesel. On a long trip to Cornwall @ 50 - 55 mph, I once averaged 106 mpg brim to brim. All this technology later hasn't resulted in much advance in economy sadly. On the same trip today in the Smart CDI, I would hope for close to 120 mpg.

  • Certainly if you use the extra power you will use more fuel. But as I explained earlier, an engine that produces more torque will produce the same power lower in the rev range, which leads to less gear changing & therefore can actually save fuel. Next year, Smart are upgrading the CDI to 54 bhp & 96 ft/lbs, (current figures 45 bhp, 81 ft/lbs) while retaining the same mpg & CO2 figures, for this very reason.

  • I quite agree but Mercedes has developed this 800CC TurboDiesel to be as fuel efficient as it possibly can be.

At present i am running a Citroen C1 diesel which has returned 751miles on just 31litres of fuel without any alterations.

If Mercedes had intended the CDi to have more power it would have given it .

Remapping an engine may produce more Hp but in using that Hp you will prabably use more fuel in the process.

A car that easily achieves over 100mpg should be left well alone.

  • Tunit recently chipped a Smart diesel in an article in Diesel Car magazine. They achieved figures of 101 ft/lbs of torque @ 2400rpm, & 60 bhp & 3750 rpm. The standard figures were 89 ft/lbs & 47 bhp at the same engine speeds. Slightly up on the quoted figures.
