In the Victorian era, Eugen Sandow must have physically appeared godly. While professional strongmen existed long before Sandow appeared, none possessed such a chiselled physique previously.Sandow organized the first ever bodybuilding contest on September 14, 1901 called the 'Great Competition'.

That's unfortunate...I appreciate the information. You're very knowledgeable.

Definitely, a very negative impact. Bodybuilders through-out the ages will notoriously offer themselves up for bad traditions. Sandow promoted smoking and released his own cigar brand. Smoking helped keep off excess fat, but Sandow died of a stroke (at a rather young age of 40 or so). Other bodybuilders demanded only two meals a day and thus kept themselves at smaller weight. There are still many giants though, Goerner climbed all the way to 290 and he was later a victim of the holocaust.

Wow, that's interesting. I'm guessing that's where the name Borneo came from when it's associated with strongmen? Steroids really have had a negative impact on bodybuilding...
