Just me on my slightly out of tune baby grand doing one of my favorite songs.

Influenced most by the original release from Keith Whitley back in 1988 when it hit #1 on Billboard Country Singles chart on December 24. Sadly Keith left this world far too young at 33, less than 6 months after his version hit #1... but his haunting melodies and heart felt performances will envoke emotions for generations to come.

Written by Don Schlitz & Paul Overstreet (who's solo career I also admire) the song has made it to the #1 position of the charts 2 other times...

Alison Krauss, whose version became her first solo top-10 country hit in 1995 and Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose version was his first solo single and a chart-topper in the UK in 1999. (from the movie soundtrack Notting Hill)

Personally, though I love the version by Krauss, the original by Whitley hits a soulful place that she couldn't quite reach, as did many of his songs.

Keating's version - not sure why someone would take a nice, simple ballad & up tempo it, take a whisper and orchestrate the heck out of it, and what's up with him changing the words? Like there aren't any Webster's Dictionaries in England?

This is a shout out for my gal who is away for the holidays.
