The cross on the buns is not a religious symbol at all.
It was to get around the ban on commerce on holy days, it's so funny to imagine a baker having a bright idea of putting a cross on a bun so he can sell it at easter.
Easter buns with a cross on them are a joke.
Please enjoy them like l do, there's nothing easter about them.

the cross on the top traditionally is a paste made from flour and water and you put it on before cooking with no need to cut a cross in. hope that helps :)
