I had to run some errands on a pleasant Saturday in early November. I was going near the tracks, so I brought a camera and my scanner planning to grab a train or two in my spare time. As it turned out, I never got my errands done as every time I went back to do them, I would spot another eastbound coming across the 1st Street bridge!

Train #1: CP 280 EB manifest, 3:19 PM
CP 9768 (AC4400CW)
CITX 3083 (SD40-2)
CSX 8094 (SD40-2)

Four kids on bikes (three went behind my camera) blow the new quad gates at Plankinton Avenue, inducing the engineer to honk at what is now a quiet crossing. After crossing in front of the train, they turned around, stopped, and watched it go by!!

Train #2: CP 282 EB manifest, 3:40 PM
ICE 6444 (SD40-2)
DME 6200 (SD40-2)
CP 5933 (SD40-2)
CP 9657 (AC4400CW)

I should have been watching the time. Just after I stopped recording and was folding up my tripod, I heard the rumble of locomotives and Amtrak #7 westbound zipped across the bridge on the other track!

Train #3: CP 276 EB manifest, 4:11 PM
CITX 3059 (SD40-2)
CEFX 3133 (SD40M-2)
ICE 6405 (SD40-2)

Train #4: CP 290 EB manifest, 4:30 PM
CP 9548 (AC4400CW)
CEFX 2797 (SD40M-2)

Immediately after this train, the KK River swing bridge opened up to let a boat with a tall mast through.

Train #5: CP 277 WB manifest, 4:53 PM
CEFX 3173 (SD40-2)
NREX 5668 (SD40-2)
DME 6085 (SD40-2)

The two trailing units are ex-CP, on home rails. I abandoned what would have been a perfectly sunlit shot of this lashup to set up between the bridges due to the approach of...

Train #6: Amtrak 337 WB Hiawatha, 4:55 PM
AMTK 56 (P42DC)
AMTK 90224 (NPCU)

The day ends with a glimpse of 277 pulling up to Cut-Off before switching in the yard, seen from the Canal Street bridge. Alas, they would not depart before dark.

  • Attack of the sd40s!

  • And that is perfect proof for why quad gates don't instantly make a railroad crossing perfectly safe, as well as why quiet zones should not exist.

  • Nice vid. Excellent bridge shots!
