Grant Fuhr aka Coco. All the oilers called Fuhr coco as that was his nickname back in them days.
-
His save against the Islanders at the 2:47 mark was SICK!!! Knocked out of the crease, and he still made a diving stop.
-
@sampammer Example: In 1983-84 when they first won the Cup Moog was 20th in goals against average and tied for 15th in save percentage, and Fuhr was 23rd in goals against average and 13th in save percentage.
Explain to me what "fit" means. Neither one would have fit on the last place team? Or the last place goalies wouldn't have fit with Gretzky and company?
Fun debate by the way, Thanks!

@TheGoalieGuru For the time they with the Oil, Fuhr and Moog were certainly top 10 goalies and probably top 5 in the NHL. You can argue numbers all you want but fact was that these guys fit very well in the Oiler team puzzle. Ranford was excellent at the right time.
You know hockey is a team game and you take almost any player from those teams and they don't succeed the same way elsewhere.
You see that today when UFAs go to greener pastures and look positively ordinary.

@sampammer So do you think that the Oilers were just lucky enough to have two of the better goalies in the league?
Do you think the odds are better that the Oilers team made them look good or did Moog and Fuhr make the Oilers look good? Oh, then there is Ranford. Was he also a great goalie?
Please keep in mind after Edmonton in the 80's, these three goalies won nothing and had very AVERAGE careers at their PRIME AGES.
Peace!

@TheGoalieGuru er. . . . I sat in the stands and watched. I'm not a stats guy and I won't try to argue that. Don't have access to the numbers and they don't mean much by themselves anyways.
BTW: I did not say Moog never made big saves. Moog was great, no question, but Fuhr was the obvious choice to keep. Guess you had to be there.
Back around 1980, Mess was a big source of fan frustration. He was terrible in the Oiler zone. Good thing Sather didn't listen to the nay sayers.
-
@sampammer You have proof of all these breakaways? I don't remember that at all. Messier dropped more bombs than weaker players on weaker teams?
It's really amazing to hear people talk about all these myths of breakaways now. I love how people make the excuse when I tell them that Moog had as good as stats as Fuhr but the somehow Moog didn't make the "big save" like Fuhr did.
Where are these stats and videos of these so called "big saves"?
-
@GoJetsGo90 Moog never got the full appreciation that Fuhr did. Moog was terrific and one of the best in the league but there is no doubt that Fuhr was a level above him.
-
Well, true but the other five guys on his side were always down in the other team's end. He stonewalled so many breakaways it was amazing.
Oilers were always looking for spectacular breakouts. Messier dropped so many bombs in his own end it wasn't funny.
It's really amusing to hear people downplay his abilities now. At the time (Oiler's glory days), there was universal acknowledgement of how good he was. Big thing was, he was there when they needed him.

lol, 2:50
where did you find the footage from the Alumni game? I've searching all over the internet and never finding any alumni game at all. Great video by the way!

His stats were very average! Good thing his team scored a ton!

@TheGoalieGuru He didn't start playing till he got 5 or 6 goals scored on him, by then the Oilers already had 6 or 7.

@tjackson76 I have heard that excuse a million times. It's become a great myth!
He never won anything without some guys named Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, etc, etc, etc. in front of him. During his days that he won Cups his partner Andy Moog had the EXACT SAME STATS as he did. So i guess he didn't start playing until 5 or 6 and should be in the Hall too!
