The cheating scandals around standardized tests should alarm Afrikan people that we need to make a firm commitment to developing a new independent system of schools or home schools based on our needs.

Pay-for-performance is not working as teachers lose interest in the education process and only "teach for the test." I do not blame them, but our children are losing in this game of high-stakes assessment.

The focus on testing as the main assessment limits the education of school children and does not assess very important elements. For example, these tests do not assess commitment, love of learning, self-awareness, overall character, and many others characteristics that are absolutely important for Afrikan liberation.

We must build our own institutions and assess our children in a way that is relevant to our plight and our situation right now.

Revolutionary Love,

  • Excellent. The questions remain of what are our children being tested for, what is this standard that WE have set for them, what real tests in life will these tests prepare them for in life, what sense of obligation and duty and understanding of their power and its proper application in service to our community will they feel as a result of these test which lead them to confuse memorizing with thinking? Our burning desire to be validated by others is destroying the minds of our children.

  • @mwalimubaruti Our validation by others is certainly at the base of this problem for us. We must have assessments that assess the characteristics we desire in our children, not what someone else feels they should have. Thanks for being an inspiration Baba Baruti.

  • I am in the Atlanta area and I feel sorry for our children who are being done a diservice in these government schools. That i why we homeschool ours. These past 2yrs I have seen the amount of homeschoolers of colors increase at our state Homeschool Convention compared to previous years. Its amazing that it has to get this bad for us to see the light but I am just grateful for the ones who are waking up and seeing the truth about government schools.

well let's address the problem , one can ace a test and still be dumb out on the streets. Success isn't necessarily equatable with testing just means you test well, now show me what you do not what you know.

  • And the idea that getting rid of testing is gonna, what, get rid of poor performance? It's lunacy, and will do no more than wipe problems under the rug. You'll have a bunch of teachers that are paid to do no more than go to school, AND there will be no way to assess the awful performance of these schools. This "solution" seems to me equivalent to the idea that we'll combat theft by making no money and burning all we have, therefore no-one will have the incentive to rob us.

  • This video is a triumph of economic ignorance. Does anyone think, for instance, that the management of a large company, in regards to their engineers, chemists, administrators or what have you will say: "starting today, you'll be paid regardless of your performance. I want you guys to be rendering your services out of LOVE, not profit!"

No, because that policy would be retarded.

  • We also dont think about the fact that a Standardized test is an Assesment of Basic Skills. So what you are telling me is that these kids cant Read, Write, or compute Math on a basic level. The problem goes way beyond the test. What are you being paid for if these kids dont have basic skills?? They need to take out the calculators before 4th grade, teach REAL Phonic, and have Conversations about Real Literature.
