R News profiles Shukria Amani, an MBA student at Rochester Institute of Technology's E. Philip Saunders College of Business, who discusses her exodus from Afghanistan and the ongoing plight of that country and its people.
Shukria Amani is pursuing her MBA degree from the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology. At RIT Amani previously completed graduate studies on a Fulbright Scholarship following the American-led-invasion that toppled the Taliban government.
Amani was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan. Amani says life was very good in Kabul until the Communists took power. After that war the Mujahidin and then the Talaban followed.
During the Taliban regime from 1996 to 2003, Amani was banned from her job teaching economics at Kabul University. The Taliban government jailed Amani for four days for her efforts to continue teaching. Despite her hardships she has fond memories of her home city.
As an RIT student Amani is living on borrowed time. When she finishes her MBA Amani hopes to have a co-op here in the United States, preferably in Rochester. She likes America very much. She says in America there are happy endings. Not in Afghanistan.
Well that's a meaningful, excellent story of Shukria Amani ; as another graduate student here at R.I.T., it's inspiring to hear of the humble courage & humanity of this intelligent woman who's been through so much hardship that faces such open-minded, brave people who struggle under regimes marred by selfish warlords & political-kingpins. I hope all the best for Ms. Amani here at R.I.T. and wish her success in her future work in the Rochester area & beyond.
