The U.S. State Department has blocked the importation of M-1 Garands and M-1 Carbines from South Korea saying that they could pose a threat to our American community. I would say that the only threat to our American community is a State Department run by a bunch of anti-gun freedom hating maggots like Hillary Clinton and the head maggot of them all, Barack Obama (with all due respect). Luckily congress is going to do something about it.

Obama Administration Reverses Course, Forbids Sale of 850,000 Antique Rifles

The South Korean government, in an effort to raise money for its military, wants to sell nearly a million antique M1 rifles that were used by U.S. soldiers in the Korean War to gun collectors in America.

The Obama administration approved the sale of the American-made rifles last year. But it reversed course and banned the sale in March -- a decision that went largely unnoticed at the time but that is now sparking opposition from gun rights advocates.

A State Department spokesman said the administration's decision was based on concerns that the guns could fall into the wrong hands.

"The transfer of such a large number of weapons -- 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines -- could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes," the spokesman told FoxNews.com.

"We are working closely with our Korean allies and the U.S. Army in exploring alternative options to dispose of these firearms."

Gun control advocates praised the Obama administration for taking security seriously.

"Guns that can take high-capacity magazines are a threat to public safety," said Dennis Henigan of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "Even though they are old, these guns could deliver a great amount of firepower. So I think the Obama administration's concerns are well-taken."

But gun rights advocates point out that possessing M1 rifles is legal in the United States -- M1s are semi-automatics, not machine guns, meaning the trigger has to be pulled every time a shot is fired -- and anyone who would buy a gun from South Korea would have to go through the standard background check.

"Any guns that retail in the United States, of course, including these, can only be sold to someone who passes the National Instant Check System," said David Kopel, research director at the conservative Independence Institute. "There is no greater risk from these particular guns than there is from any other guns sold in the United States."

M1 carbines can hold high-capacity ammunition clips that allow dozens of rounds to be fired before re-loading, but Chris Cox, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, noted that is true about any gun in which an ammunition magazine can be inserted -- including most semi-automatics.

"Anything that accepts an external magazine could accept a larger capacity magazine," Cox said.

"But the average number of rounds fired in the commission of a crime is somewhere between 1 and 2 ... this issue just shows how little the administration understands about guns."

He called the administration's decision "a de facto gun ban, courtesy of Hillary Clinton's State Department."

Asked why the M1s pose a threat, the State Department spokesman referred questions to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. ATF representatives said they would look into the question Monday afternoon, but on Wednesday they referred questions to the Justice Department. DOJ spokesman Dean Boyd referred questions back to the State Department.

According to the ATF Guidebook on Firearms Importation, it would normally be legal to import the M1s because they are more than 50 years old, meaning they qualify as "curios or relics." But because the guns were given to South Korea by the U.S. government, they fall under a special category that requires permission from the State Department before any sale.

Kopel said that he hopes the State Department spokesman's statement that it is working to "dispose" of the guns does not mean they want to melt them down.

  • Is there any real update on this? I've heard the bill is stalled.

  • @Oldsninetyeigth

    Update:

Get Obama out of office and we can go back to normal. Keep Obama in office, then you will see his true colors, true colors, true colors.....

  • @jbranstetter04 Will see? We're already seeing his true colors :u I'm amazed we managed to survive this long with him. I'm terrified to think about four more years of him being in charge.

  • @Sev89 It can happen, four more years of him. And the next four years will not be like the last. He will know that he will not be passing any big legislation. He will then be furthering his goals by way of his Administration. He will do all he can to make this country a big government, top down country. And remember that the American Administration has a lot of power. If he is able to replace a "conservative" Supreme Court justice, then we have had it, as they will strip us of our rights.

  • @jbranstetter04 I've heard the justice argument quite a lot. While I do believe the SOB has every intention of doing it, they wouldn't be able to go and overturn the Heller decision just like that without pissing off half the country. As you said, anything he intends to implement will be through executive order. Which will, once again piss off half the country.

  • @Sev89 You state twice that it will "piss off half the country". What will be the result of that? I say nothing. He is the President and they are the Supreme Court. What are the pissed off going to do, shoot them? I hope not. Believe it or not, I would actually defend them. We have lost no rights in this country that has not been of the peoples choosing. We are still free to make up our own government. Not caring is not an excuse (not that you do not care).

  • The difference between Obama's politics and a Garand rifle? One's an outdated piece of crap left over from the Cold War, and the other is "the greatest battle implement ever devised".

  • @dukenukemthreed They don't legitimately think that the gangs will use them. Only their useful idiots. They simply want to remove guns from the equation one step at a time until the American people wake up one day to find that they have no rights at all and no means to protect them. "It's for a perfect society" <---That will never exist. Always choose freedom or you can be "cleansed" because you are not seen necessary to society by bureaucrats. It's a pivotal point in our history my friends.

  • @ChrsGuit Maybe some no-name group is getting them so they aren't destroyed? You never know. As far as the ammo, I would have no idea who would want that much. No way it was state militia...

  • @mrpreserveourcountry I read recently that only the Garands will be re-imported... something about the "high capacity" the carbine's magazine holds... which is a crock. The average gun crime is commited with 1 to 3 rounds. Odd thing about this situation is that CMP is saying that they will not be recieving these Garands... so where will they go? I'm hoping some lobbyist isn't buying them all up to have them disposed of. There are also 45 million rounds of ammo that was "purchased by a 3rd party"

  • @dukenukemthreed That administration was still able to win control. Whether by corruption or not. The best thing Obama and his senate have done is make America wake up a lot faster. One thing is for sure, they are afraid of Ron Paul. Even the RHINOS.

  • @mrpreserveourcountry

I laugh at what these law school asswipes consider "perfect", Jesus Christ look at the laws they have written or the "war on drugs".

The administration is an insolent abomination.

  • @ChrsGuit Also, on the CMP website, the carbines are only on their auction page. A bavarian service carbine is currently at $904.99. Mine is an LGKST one w/o the bavarian markings on the top of the receiver by the bolt. Underwood receiver with what I suspect is a matching barrel. I paid under $500 for mine from the CMP little more than a year or two ago. Those are definitely going up in price since they don't expect anymore imports.

  • @ChrsGuit I always make sure to research anything I'm remotely interested in before I go to a gun show or store. I check price and small areas to check for like finish, maker, year etc. I would be willing to pay a little more for a Winchester p.17 than an Eddystone for example. But it does get me how I see identical surplus Garands to mine priced over $1,000 at those shows. Even the carbines at around $800, which makes more sense to me because the CMP (last I checked) was out for good.

  • @mrpreserveourcountry I agree. I have went to several local shows, and it seems the vendors are buying from CMP and jacking them up. I saw one priced from a vendor at a local show for $1,400. He talked me up about how it was a ww2 model and rare, etc. I picked it up and read the serial number and said "nope partner... hate to tell you, but it has a 1955 serial number and post-Korea stamps. I paid $600 for one identical from the cmp. He shrugged, grinned and said "guess you know more than I do."

  • @dukenukemthreed I always hear co-workers lecture me and say "they aren't going to take our guns... they never will", but what they don't see is right in front of them. The government dosnt "take" our rights. They come out with the EPA, the ATF, the DEA, etc and these organizations magically have the power to enforce restrictions and regulations on our rights. They don't take the guns, they regulate the piss out of them until no one wants to deal with all the trouble to get one...Time for change

  • @ChrsGuit

Damn right, these bastards move in with anti-constitutional law like side-stepping ninjas
