VEO7 running for first time in 25 years. We used a heater plug instead of heating the head with a blowlamp, the wire fell off the heater plug hence the dash to put it back on again!

  • When you used the blowlamp, did the running improve or stay the same?

  • Sorry never got round to trying the blow lamp. Seeing similar engines which use a blow lamp it makes a big difference as it heats the cyl head and they are a lot smoother running.

  • Probably better to call them hot bulb engines or oil engines. They predate diesels and work on a different principle altogether. But the name "semi diesel" is known, although not so well understood. The thing ran too rich and that electric heater plug probably could not hold heat itself, vital for the fuel vaporization (my guess)

  • Dead right about the heater plug. We were going to heat up the cylinder head with a blowlanp like you are supposted to but decided to give it a quick try with the electric plug which does not of course give enough heat. The engine is filled with water to prevent damage, we stopped when it got too warm. THese hot bulb engines never run very well without a load to keep them hot.

  • The only thing diesel about a "Semi-diesel" engine is the use of the word "diesel" in the name.

They are not compression ignition engines, in fact the compression ratio is less than old stationary petrol engines. Introduction of fuel takes place much, much earlier than diesel engines would accept and the timing is not very critical even at that. As well, the pressure of injection is only a few bar.

Hi, I like your direkt translation "fireball engine" .

In Germany these engines were called "glow head engine". - If anyone is not believing, - I believe they would run on whaleoil.

One of the most famos german hot bulbs was the engine of the "Lanz Bulldog" traktor.

I also like the Wichmann Rubb, Hundested, Tändkula hot bulbs, and just discovered that the finnish had also quite small ones.

  • Its diesel, but barely. It doesn't have enough compression to really light the diesel off. It relies on keeping just enough heat inside to keep running.

  • I saw change colour of smokes ( Black and white smokes. Is it diesel or petrol?

  • Hi there, these engines were used to power a wide variety of farm and mechanical implements. Prehaps and oat roller or corn mill on a farm and mabey powering a generator for lighting. Also water pumping was another common use.

I'm sorry to see people have negative rated your comment, it's a very valid question.

    Regards,

    Phill.

  • Is he in hiding?

  • what is this engine suposed to do

  • cant u run it at full load without heater etc as it heats the head up itself or do u have to wait a long time for it to get hot?

  • i would recommend wearing a mask when using that. nice engine XD
