Lord John Stevens, Commissioner of London's world renowned law enforcement agency headquartered at Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police, between 2000 and 2005 was the figurehead of an exhaustive and thorough investigation into the allegations by Mohammed Fayed and others that Princess Diana had been somehow murdered by deliberately setting up a car crash for her in 1997. Despite glaring discrepancies in the conspiracy allegations (such as claiming there were two contradictory methods by which the car was crashed) it was felt by the Coroner opening the Inquest into Diana's death in 2003 that the police should become involved due to the allegations of serious and persistent criminality. In the final part, Lord Stevens concludes his answers to the press. The first question from the Daily Telegraph articulates what was thought by many on the conclusion of the investigation: that the conspiracy allegations had been adequately addressed and the Inquest could now be a brief and inexpensive formality. However, despite the crushing weight of evidence against his claims, Mohammed Fayed continued his self-indulgent campaign against the truth. The result of this was it took almost a year after the publication of the report before the inquests began and they were to last six months adding considerably to the already scandalous figure of £3.69 million you hear quoted by the current Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, towards the end of the clip.

Despite paying one of England's top lawyers, Michael Mansfield QC, a rumoured £6 million to argue against the obvious in court, Fayed failed to persuade the jury that Diana and his son had been murdered and was forced into making a humiliating retraction of his allegations on national tv on the night of the verdict in April 2008. He said it was for the sake of Diana's sons, almost 18 months after they had thanked Lord Stevens and his team of detectives for "the professionalism and thoroughness of their investigation."

More poignantly, Diana's sons also said in December 2006: "We hope Lord Stevens' conclusive findings will bring speculation about our mother's death to an end."

Wouldn't Fayed stand taller in the world today if he'd taken that advice?

Thanks to the BBC for providing the footage of the press conference.
