We hope you enjoy this compilation of photos taken on the island of Maui in 1979, 1982, and 1986. Included are photos of the West Maui Mountains, a sugar cane burn, the Iao Valley and Needle, Kapalua, North Maui, Lahaina, the Pioneer Inn, the Banyan Tree, the Carthaginian, the Jodo Mission, Kaanapali, Hana and O'heo Gulch (AKA the 7 Sacred Pools), Haleakala, and rainbows and sunsets. Also included were a few shots from a sailing trip to Lanai. Molokai can also be seen in the distance in some shots.

Pay close attention to the Iao Valley and the profile of John F. Kennedy in a rock formation. It's a must see in the Iao Valley.

Many of the pineapple fields photographed north of Kapalua, and in Lanai, are gone due to development.

The pictures of Haleakala were taken by John's mother using an antique box camera.

Aloha!

  • I was born and raised on Maui. I remember all of these places that you showed. I lived in the little town of Paia back in the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately we moved to Alaska in '71. then we moved to Arizona in '78 but we spent the summers in Lahaina, Hawaii. I try to go back to Hawaii as much as I can. There is also the prison in Lahaina and Kamehmeha's summer palace in Lahaina as well. There is also the healing rock. If you went during the winter months did you get to see any whales?

  • We never got to see any whales. They were either on their way, or had just left, all the times we visited.
