    i think that Paddy's book puts forth the premise that the social darwinism push manifests itself in the form of colonialism of Deaf spaces (schools, clubs, associations) and Deaf bodies and minds.

    Baynton has an awesome book called Forbidden Signs: Deaf Culture and the Campaign Against ASL, Lane's book - Mask of Benevolence and Branson and Miller Damned for their Difference all show how social darwinism is a form of colonization

  • It should be spelled COLONIALISM. It has nothing to do with imperialism. Let me try here. The 1880 Milan Resolution that banned the use of sign language in schools launched language belittlement and bigotry. For many years, deaf people were willing to comply with policies and regulations generated by the 1880 Milan Resolution and to celebrate those who could talk. Even today many deaf children thought they will become hearing after graduation. That's how colonialism works. An erratic mindset.
