This video shows a Lowne Atmospheric engine made in England around 1897. It's shown running on propane. This engine is unique in that it was probably one of the crudest production engines ever built. Other than the flywheel, there is very little machining on the engine & most pieces were of cut, shaped & soldiered stock. The cylinder, piston & copper water tank are only 0.030" thick.
This engine has an unusual pin hole opening in the valve that lets in air after the valve has been closed, to keep a flame alive (burning) inside the cylinder to BDC. It uses a valving linkage that is driven off the piston, making it a reversible engine. Other than that it runs like a conventional flame licker or vacuum engine.
